Atlantic Monthly Student Writers' Competition awards:

In a national student writing competition run since 1997 by the Atlantic Monthly, with winners announced in the May issue of the Atlantic, work written for Fred Strebeigh's nonfiction courses at Yale has received almost a fifth of all awards and more than a fifth of all prizes in nonfiction.  No university in America (except Yale as a whole) approaches that number of Atlantic writing awards. 

 

 

Work written by students in Yale courses taught by Fred Strebeigh that has won Atlantic Monthly awards:

 

2009 Student Writers' Competition of the Atlantic Monthly (announced in May 2010 issue of Atlantic).

Honorable Mention:  Emily Appelbaum, essay written for English 454 (nonfiction writing--voice and structure).

Honorable Mention:  Laura Marie Gottesdiener, essay written for English 489 (writing concentration final project).

2008 Student Writers' Competition of the Atlantic Monthly (announced in May 2009 issue of Atlantic).

Winner, 3rd prize:  Simon Tudiver, essay written for F&ES 40002 (environmental writing).

Honorable Mention:  Kate Lund, essay written for English 120 (reading and writing the modern essay).

2007 Student Writers' Competition of the Atlantic Monthly.

Honorable Mention:  Rebecca Watters, essay written for F&ES 40002.

2006 Student Writers' Competition of the Atlantic Monthly.

Winner, 1st prize:  Kent Garber, essay written for English 454 (nonfiction writing--voice and structure).

2005 Student Writers' Competition of the Atlantic Monthly.

Winner, 2nd prize:  Adriane Quinlan, essay written for English 454.

Honorable Mention:  Alexandra Suich, essay written for English 454.

Honorable Mention:  Zvika Krieger, essay written for English 454.

2004 Student Writers' Competition of the Atlantic Monthly.

Winner, 1st prize:  Jeremy Kutner, essay written for English 454.

Honorable Mention:  Sarah Stillman, essay written for English 454.

Winner, 2nd prize:  Samantha Culp, essay written for English 454.

2001 Student Writers' Competition of the Atlantic Monthly.

Winner, 2nd prize:  Maeve Herbert, essay written for English 454.

Honorable Mention:  Andrew Cowdery, essay written for English 454.

1998 Student Writers' Competition of the Atlantic Monthly.

Winner, 2nd prize:  Jamie James, essay written for F&ES 583.

Honorable Mention:  Eli Kintisch, essay written for English 454.

1997 Student Writers' Competition of the Atlantic Monthly.

Winner, 1st prize:  Pam McElwee, essay written for F&ES 584 (environmental writing).

 

The listing of 25 students above represents only a small fraction of the truly wonderful students whom I have had the pleasure to teach.  It also does not include students who won Atlantic awards for work written in years after taking the courses above or while taking other courses and working for campus publications.  (Much writing that has won Atlantic awards, including much of the work above,  was published by students in some of Yale's excellent campus publications.)  From 1997 through 2010, of the 120 awards for nonfiction given out by the Atlantic Monthly, 39 awards (more than 30% of the total) have gone to work written by students from Yale.  As I've said elsewhere, it's a great honor to work with the students who gather at this university and who create a fine challenge for all of us who teach here.  -- Fred Strebeigh

 

 

 

Teaching Awards received by Fred Strebeigh:

Richard H. Brodhead '68 Teaching Prize for Teaching Excellence by Non-Ladder Faculty, awarded 2009.  (The Brodhead Prize is presented by the dean at a college-wide ceremony during commencement after selection by Yale's Committee on Teaching and Learning.)

 

William Clyde DeVane Award for teaching at Yale, awarded 2004.  (The DeVane award, presented each year by Phi Beta Kappa to one member of the active faculty, is described by university publications as "the oldest and highest-ranking award for undergraduate teaching at Yale.")
